Addie Brown

Domestic worker whose peripatetic lifestyle reflects the restrictive nature of employment for people of her race, gender, and class.

Throughout her short life, Addie Brown moved relentlessly between four cities seeking work - Hartford, Farmington, Waterbury, New York City, and Philadelphia. She often relocated several times a year, her shortest stay being just six days. Brown never remained in one place for more than a few years.
